Passing the California or New York Bar Exam When English is Your Second Language

The bar exam results for July 2016 from New York indicated that foreign educated lawyers passed at a first time rate of 45%, and that all foreign educated lawyers passed at a 37% rate.  In California, the statistics of foreign educated lawyers are even worse.

We have been receiving emails from applicants who are having trouble with the bar exam because English is their second language. Also, we have had a multitude of people from foreign cities read
this blog.

How should a person prepare for the New York or California  bar exam when English is their second language?

First, and for most, obtain a The MBE & UBE Testing Institute private tutor to evaluate your essays. Working with a tutor will dramatically improve your chances of passing.

Write, write and write some more. An applicant needs to learn to write on the New York or the California bar subjects to both understand the law and to develop a writing structure.
Memorize the law “cold” because you have a built in language barrier. You do not have the time to think about the law, you must know it.

Start early.

Implementing the above will help you be successful on the New York or California Bar Exam.

The MBE & UBE Testing Institute will be conducting a UBE & MBE Exam seminar in Charleston, South Carolina on December 3, 2016, in Newark on December 10th and in Washington, DC on December 17th.  Contact us for details.

The MBE & UBE Testing Institute knows that taking the bar exam as a repeat taker can be an isolating experience. The MBE & UBE Testing Institute helps the student keep motivated and confident through interaction with an MBE & UBE Testing Institute’s bar tutor.
