Goal Achievement

Goal achievement is the key to studying for the bar exam, especially if you are a repeat taker. You must keep your eye on your ultimate goal – passing the bar exam, along with figuring out how best to get to that ultimate goal of passing the bar exam.

How do you go about getting prepared for the bar exam? Let’s look at your study goals. You need to accomplish two things: the ultimate and overall goal, which is to pass the bar exam, and a day-to-day goal, which is to work towards achieving your ultimate goal.

It is not only about setting your goals for success, but also by developing the strategies to achieve the goal and then implementing the strategies.

Implementing the strategies of passing the bar exam include goals, each and every day that you must work on. We have discussed employing a study plan. That study plan should include a goal each day – i.e. working on the black letter law or working on improving your essays, MBEs or MPTs. Make sure the goal is a realistic goal, but make sure that you are moving forward each and every day.

Implementing your strategy includes working on your weaknesses every day so that you can improve your performance when it comes time to sit for your bar exam.

Remember that studying for the bar exam is a journey that must be accomplished in incremental steps.

The MBE Testing Institute knows that taking the bar exam as a repeat taker can be an isolating experience. The MBE Testing Institute helps the student keep motivated and confident through interaction with an MBE Testing Institute’s bar tutor.

Preparation, Success and Training

The MBE Testing Institute will begin the process of discussing important topics to get you ready for the July 2015 bar exam. Although this advice is mainly for repeat takers, our advice can be used for those taking the bar exam for the first time.

Getting ready for the July 2015 bar exam is all about preparation. Preparation includes your mental attitude as well as your outward preparation. I often compare taking the bar exam to preparing for a marathon. You cannot jump out of bed the morning of the marathon and think that you will be able to run successfully, mile after mile, with no training. You must prepare beforehand and you must get ready for your bar exam marathon.

Mentally, you must get yourself comfortable with the idea that you will work every day and that, with proper preparation, you will pass the examination. Winners know the value of preparation. The philosopher, Confucius, once said that “success depends upon previous preparation, and without such preparation, there is sure to be failure.”

Muhammad Ali, the champion boxer, said that “I hated every minute of the training, but I said, “Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.”

July 2015 will be your championship moment, don’t let yourself down. Prepare to study and prepare to pass the bar exam in July.

Make A Schedule and Stick to It

In order to pass the bar exam in July 2015, you need two things: time-management and discipline.

Planning ahead and sticking to a schedule will conquer both requirements. Thorough preparation is the key to passing the exam and having a schedule in place will allow you to manage your time and to stick to a study timetable. For a plan to work, you have to address your learning style as well as the substantive areas you will be tested on.

First make a calendar of the next 2 months – up to the bar exam date in July 2015. Set out a timetable of when and where you will study per day. Be sure your schedule is realistic. If you make it too onerous, you will not follow the schedule and you will put off studying. Be realistic with your goals and your study habits. For example, you can’t go throughout the entire day with no lunch or no exercise or take no breaks You have to write a study plan that suits you and your personality, without slacking off.

In the beginning, you are going to struggle with the large amount of materials, but keep at it and keep pushing yourself. It’s like training for a race. You first have to struggle through the materials until it starts feeling right, then you will be clicking on all cylinders.

Foreign Educated Lawyers with an LLM for the Practice of Law Can Sit for the Georgia Bar Exam

On February 21, 2014, the Supreme Court of Georgia ruled that foreign educated students who complete an LLM degree are now eligible to sit for the Georgia bar exam.  Georgia now joins New York and California as some of the only states that allow foreign educated attorneys to sit for the bar exam and practice as a licensed attorney in these states.

The MBE Testing Institute has created an exciting one-on-one Tutorial for Foreign Trained Lawyers for the MBE.  Statistics indicate foreign lawyers score stunningly low on the MBE compounded by slow reading comprehension due to English as their second language.  The MBE Testing Institute will provide Foreign Trained Lawyers with the motivation, skill set and substantive law to increase their MBE score.   The MBE Testing Institute specializes in Tutoring Foreign Lawyers who will be taking the California, Georgia and New York bar exams.

Repeat Takers: Cross the Finish Line with The MBE Testing Institute

With California releasing their results last Friday, most of the states, except for Georgia, have released their bar exam results.  For those takers who have failed the bar exam, you will need a bar exam tutor to get you over the finish line.

As a repeat taker, you must take the bar exam again. It’s time to refocus again on the bar.  Taking the exam again will call for a change in approach, strategy, and preparation for you to pass that final hurdle in fulfilling your dream of becoming a lawyer. The bar exam is not an academic exercise. The bar examiners want to know whether you are prepared to practice law.

Don’t do the same thing you did for the first bar you took. Employ a private bar tutor, like The MBE Testing Institute, who can work one on one with you to keep you sharp and motivated and you will be on the way to passing the bar. The MBE Testing Institute has a unique cross training system that keeps the students working towards their goals of passing the bar exam.  We grade your questions, probing areas where you need improvement.  We have a weekly discussion lecture on substantive law. We talk about strategy, speed and accuracy and MBE Testing Institute drills the student, using repetition, as a means of learning.  We have had much success with students who have taken the bar exam two, three and even eight times.

Repeat Bar Exam Takers: The Myths and Reality of Passing

Most law graduates are under the false impression that the more times you take a state bar exam the greater your changes are to passing

In fact, it is just the opposite. The more times you sit for a state bar, you decrease your chances of being successful.

The statistical proof is clear and convincing that repeat takers continuously do poorer on the bar exam than first time takers. Here are the hard facts:

The Pennsylvania February 2015 bar results indicate that the first time takers passed at 68.5%. The second time takers pass rate was 47%, the third time taker pass rate was 29.5% and the fourth time takers passed at 15%.

In New York, for the February 2015 bar exam results, first time takers passed at a 70% rate for ABA schools, while the overall takers passed at a 43% pass rate.

In Massachusetts, for the February 2015 bar results, first time takers passed at a 66.7% rate, second time takers passed at a 61%, third time takers passed at a 23.5% rate, fifth time taker or more at a 9%.

These statistical repeat taker numbers are a clear representation that repeat takers, on an average, only pass the bar exam at about a 33% rate. Obtaining a bar exam tutor should be the number one goal for all repeat takers.

Second Career and Older Students Facing the Bar Exam

We have seen many older students who have decided to go back to law school as a second career. Sometimes it seems like their fellow students, who are younger than they are, seem to pick up the material faster, despite the younger students’ often careless attitudes towards studying.
The older student finishes law school, but despite studying hard, has trouble picking up the tactics and strategies to pass the bar exam.
Statistics show that older students and students coming from a second career score lower on the bar exam than the average law student. There are many theories for this disparity, but it’s not that the older student doesn’t know the material. The difference is how the older student applies the material in a lawyer-like fashion when he/she has spent time at another career. As we know, legal writing is much different than writing for a newspaper or writing a report for your previous job.
The MBE Testing Institute has worked with many older students who are pursuing a second career as a lawyer but are having trouble passing the bar exam. We understand your problems and have the solution to help you pass the bar exam.

Why Did You Fail And How The MBE Testing Institute Can Help You

Most law students fail the Bar Exam for three major reasons:

1. Repeat Bar Takers revert back to bad writing habits and poor analytical skills developed in law school

Under the pressures of the bar exam, many students revert back to bad habits. These bad habits allowed them to graduate from law school, but will be the kiss of death on the bar. Some of the bad habits include, not organizing your answer, no line by line analysis and not answering the call of the question.

The MBE Testing Institute will teach you the skills to analyze both the essays and the MBE, with improvement on better writing analysis.

2. Repeat Bar Takers have poor preparation and time management skills

Many law students start their bar preparation entirely too late, leaving most in a rush mode. For the upcoming July 2015 bar, your preparation should begin earlier rather than later. You should allow yourself 5 to 6 hours per day for studying. But more importantly, studying correctly is the key. You need to write and answer many essays and MBE questions. Your answers must be evaluated by a private tutor.

The MBE Testing Institute puts each student on a two week schedule so that the student is evaluated frequently. In addition, The MBE Testing Institute evaluates every essay the student writes and every MBE exam the student takes, looking for areas in which the student can improve.

3. Repeat Bar Takers don’t really believe that they will pass

You must have a belief that you will pass. Get rid of all negative thoughts, people and things. You must truly believe that you will pass. You must say this every single day prior to the bar and you must have the confidence to succeed.

The California Bar Exam Results

The California Bar Exam results for February 2015 will be coming out on Friday, May 15th, at 6 pm PST.
California is known as the toughest bar in the United States.  Last year, in February 2014, the pass rate was only 45%. The pass rate for first time takers was 55% and the repeat pass rate was 41%.   With the statistics coming out of California, we can see the pass rate is pretty low, with  repeat takers having an incredible difficult time passing the bar exam.  These statistics from last year do not reflect this bar cycle’s generally low pass rates across each state or with the mbe dropping across the board.
If you are a repeat bar exam taker, contact the MBE Testing Institute. We can help you succeed.
Good luck to all those in California waiting for results.

New York is Switching to the UBE (Uniform Bar Exam) for July 2016

New York is switching to the UBE for July 2016.  This is pretty big news for anyone planning to take the NY bar exam.

As stated on the NY Bole website, the New York Court of Appeals has adopted the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) that New York adopt the UBE effective July 2016. The Advisory Committee also recommended, and the Court of Appeals adopted, a requirement that applicants for admission in New York be required to complete an online course on New York law and take and pass an online examination on New York law, as a requirement for
admission.

The New York bar exam has been considered one of the toughest exams in the nation.   In February, the pass rate for first time takers was 56%.  For all takers, the pass rate was 43%.   In addition, foreign educated lawyers with LLMs are qualified to take the NY bar exam and they take the exam in significant numbers.  Unfortunately,  the foreign educated lawyers have failed in large numbers.   For the February 2015, the foreign educated lawyers only passed at a 29% for first time takers and 26% for repeat takers.

But effective in one year, students taking the New York bar exam will take the MBE, 6 MEE essays and 2 MPT performance tests.

Will that affect the pass rate for all takers?  Will the foreign educated lawyers pass at larger numbers with the UBE?

Another question to be asked, is with the issue of reciprocity.  Will New York allow someone sitting in another UBE state to ask for reciprocity in New York.  As of now,   15 states take the UBE.

And finally, with New York being the first big state to change their bar exam in favor of the UBE, will other states follow?  Will all states begin to adopt a uniform bar exam (whether it is the UBE or MEE)?  Presumably, that is the  NCBE’s goal – for a lawyer to take only one exam and be able to practice in all states. Or is the NCBE in it for the money they can make?

In addition to changing to the UBE, New York will add an additional state component:

The same 50 multiple choice state-specific NY questions would remain as a 1-hour test to be given concurrently with the UBE. The good news is that they are proposing to also offer just the 50 NY questions in December and Early Spring for those who pass the UBE but fail the NY section.

Now it’s Time to Get an MBE Bar Exam Tutor

We have been talking with students since the bar exam results have come out. The questions we’ve been asked more frequently is “what should I do if I was unsuccessful on the bar exam?”

First, you can pass the bar exam in July 2015. Get right back up and say, “I will pass in July 2015.”
The MBE scores have taken a hit lately.  Many of the student inquiries to The MBETesting Institute nationwide, who were 2x and 3x time bar takes, indicated to us that their MBE scores dropped an average of 5 to 8 points, and in some cases 12 to 15 points. To our knowledge, this has never happened in recent MBE times. So what was the cause and effect?

The MBE is going through several small reconstructions. There are longer fact patterns, single questions, fact based answers, less scale points, not revealing students’ raw scores, and, now, an additional tested subject, Federal Civil Procedure, which is a cross-over subject. These facts contributed to the lower MBE scores as well as the over-all lower bar pass rate nationwide.

Do not repeat the same class, study plan or approach you used the last time. It did not work. Coming close on the bar is good only in horse shoes. One size does not fit all. Hard work and having a study plan and study strategy will pay off. Say to yourself, “I will be a lawyer.”

You want to get the bar exam behind you and start your new life as a lawyer. Don’t dither or waste time with the “what ifs”. Stay focused and true to your goal to pass.

Obtaining an MBE Testing Institute bar exam tutor will help you pass. Many students who are repeat bar takers need a bar exam coach to help them improve their analytical skills so they can properly navigate through the MBE. This structured, personalized program is the key to passing the bar for repeat takers.
