The National Mean for the September MBE is 142.7

 1,811 examinees sat for the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE) in eight jurisdictions on September 9–10, 2020, including three jurisdictions that administered a September bar exam instead of the July bar exam, four jurisdictions that offered both a July and a September bar exam, and one jurisdiction that offered the September bar exam as well as a remote exam in October. The national mean scaled score for September 9–10 examinees was 142.7.

The results are of limited value because of the low examinee count in both the July and early September administrations. Moreover, because the October remote exam will be scored by the individual jurisdictions that administer it, NCBE will not have MBE mean score data to report for the remote option.

Approximately 400 additional examinees in five jurisdictions sat for the bar exam on September 30–October 1, 2020; MBE results from that administration are scheduled to be announced in November. Additionally, approximately 30,000 examinees sat for a remotely administered exam on October 5–6.

New York Will Administer the First Remote Full UBE Exam for the February 2021 Bar Exam

 Last week, the New York Court of Appeals announced that New York will administer a remote bar exam in February 2021. On Monday, the New York Court of Appeals announced that they will test the complete UBE bar exam. 

The February 2021 exam will be composed of all components of the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) and will provide candidates with a portable score that can be transferred to other UBE jurisdictions.  In October, New York (and many other UBE states) included a limited set of questions that together comprised half of the sessions for a full UBE. 

The Board is mindful of the challenges posed by a large potential pool of test takers for the first full remote UBE, including the impact a large number of test-takers for the February 2021 bar exam would have on the Board's ability to adequately prepare for the July 2021 exam administration.

In order to provide for a safe and secure administration of the February 2021 examination, registration will proceed on a rolling basis. The first application filing period will take place from November 1 - 15, 2020. The eligibility requirements for the first application filing period will be first-time Juris Doctor candidates who (1) graduated from an ABA-approved law school in the United States in 2020, who will graduate in January or February 2021, or who are eligible as pro bono scholars, and (2) who did not take any bar examination (in person or remotely) in any U.S. state, district or territory during 2020 or Juris Doctor candidates who (1) graduated from an ABA-approved law school in the United States between 2016 and 2020 and (2) who sat for at least one prior bar exam in New York between July 2016 and February 2020.

After the first application filing period closes, there will be a short pause in the process and the application numbers will be assessed. A second application filing period will then open.

NCBE Announces Initial Plans for Remote Option for February 2021 Bar Exam

The National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) announced initial plans that will allow jurisdictions the option to provide the bar exam remotely in February 2021, since challenges related to COVID-19 will likely still be present next year. More details will be provided in the coming weeks.

To provide flexibility to jurisdictions and candidates, NCBE plans to make a full set of bar exam materials available for a remote administration in February 2021 to be held on the same dates as the in-person administration (February 23–24, 2021). Each jurisdiction will select which mode it will use for its administration.

NCBE plans to equate the MBE, calculate scaled scores for the written components, and provide UBE and MBE score transfer services for both the in-person and the remote administrations.

Additional details will be announced in the next few weeks as jurisdictions and NCBE complete their review of the October remote administration, which was the first time the bar exam has been given to candidates testing in their own environments using their own computers.

21 States, Including Arizona, Alabama, Colorado, North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas Have Posted their Bar Exam Results for the July 2020 Bar Exam

 Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming have all posted results from their July 2020 bar exam.  Some states had a second test in September or October are we are still waiting for those results. Virginia is set to come out on Monday for their July 2020 bar exam.

1 Week Until the Florida Bar Exam

Your goal for this last week is to stay the course while you solidify your knowledge of the black letter law and improve your timing. The week before the exam is a time when you should stay the course personally and professionally.

Take care of your body and mind. This means eating well, getting some sleep and working on self-confidence. 

As to practical things, make sure you have your computer ready for examsoft. Make sure you have taken the mock exams and that any updates the FBBE wants you to do, please do it.

Facing the Bar Exam with Confidence

Part of the battle to pass the bar exam is your attitude. Don’t sit for the bar with negative energy. You must have confidence in your abilities. You have to go into the bar fired up and excited. This is your future and you will conquer it. You have studied extensively, you know the information and now you will prove it when you start the bar examination. A positive attitude is half the battle. You feel good – you do good. With confidence, you have won before you have started.
