Texas Southern Launches Investigation of its Low Bar Exam Pass Rate for July

TSU has announced that it is investigating the school’s dismal pass rate on the July bar exam.  Only 44.5% of Thurgood Marshall students who took that exam for the first time passed it—a rate that was by far the lowest among Texas’ 10 law schools and much lower than the pass rate from prior years. The school’s pass rate for the July exam in 2017 and in 2016 exceeded 60%.
Previously, TSU had been censored by the American Bar Association for violations of multiple academic standards and an anti-discrimination accreditation standard.

In early October, Thurgood Marshall announced that the ABA had approved recommendations made to ensure that the law school met certain standards over the next 2 year.

TSU has launched an investigation to figure out why the pass rate was so low.  The dean is concerned that current students may transfer to other schools after seeing the low pass rate for the most recent bar exam.

To address the academic standards, the law school has improved its first-year program by adding new curriculum and faculty collaboration to revise and create new evaluations tools. The school is also taking steps to increase student engagement. An academic success team will provide students with timed essays and provide individualized feedback. The goal is a pass rate double the 2018 first-time results.

Rhode Island and Washington, DC Bar Exam Results and The MBE & UBE Testing Institute UBE Tutorials

Rhode Island has released its bar exam results.  Rhode Island posted an overall 52% pass rate, down 14% from 66% last year.  Rhode Island will become a UBE state in February.

Maryland and Rhode Island Bar Exam Results and Joining the UBE states for 2019

Maryland released its bar exam results on Friday.  Congratulations to all who passed. Maryland will join its adjoining states and become a UBE state in presumably J 2019, although no official announcement has been made.

Rhode Island releases its bar exam results today.  Good luck to those waiting.  Rhode Island is joining the wave of northeastern states that have turned UBE and will administer the UBE for the first time in F 2019.  The passing score will be a high 276.

Maryland and Rhode Island join North Carolina, Tennessee and Illinois as the latest states to go to the UBE in 2019.

Valparaiso Is the Latest Law School to Close

After 139 years, officials announced this week that Valparaiso University School of Law will shut down no later than May 2020. Enrollment has dwindled and a proposal to move the school to Middle Tennessee State University was rejected by state regulators. The Indiana law school will close once its remaining second and third year students graduate.  Valparaiso enrolled just 29 new students in the fall of 2017, compared with 208 new students in the fall of 2013. The ABA publicly censured the law school in 2016 for failing to comply with admissions standards.

Eight ABA-accredited schools or branch campuses have closed or announced plans to close since 2014. Valparaiso joins Arizona Summit, Charlotte School of Law, Whittier, Savannah, Atlanta’s John Marshall, Indiana Tech, Cooley closed its Ann Arbor campus, William Mitchell merged with Hamline, How many other schools are on the brink?  Thomas Jefferson in San Diego is begging California to accredit them, in anticipation of losing ABA accreditation. A number of other schools are teetering on the brink of losing ABA accreditation.

It is pretty amazing that an established school like Valparaiso, who has been open for over a 100 years could not right its ship. Other traditional and established law schools may now be in jeopardy.
